What is a young carer?

A young carer is a child or teenager (aged 6 to 18) who helps look after someone in their family.

This could be a mum, dad, brother, sister, or grandparent.

The person they care for might have:

  • a physical disability (their body makes some things harder to do)
  • a learning disability (they may find it harder to understand or learn things)
  • a serious illness
  • mental health difficulties (how they feel or think)
  • problems with alcohol or drugs

You can find more information about Young Carers at the Carers Trust or for information about Cheshire Young Carers on the LiveWell website.
