All friends that you meet throughout your life are important and all will have different qualities. But overall it’s important that:
- Your friends are supportive and respectful
- Friends shouldn’t put you down or leave you out of conversations
- Friends are good at listening
- Friends are trustworthy and would not put you in danger.
Equally, if you start having a boyfriend or girlfriend there are lots of things to learn about this person and the kind of relationship you will have.
Remember though…you should never feel pressured to do things you don’t want to do in a relationship, or feel that you should stay in a relationship that you don’t want to be in.
In any relationship you should feel safe, supported, happy and trusted.
If you’re not sure about a relationship, it’s always good to talk to someone you trust, like a friend of family member, or you can chat to your school nurse in confidence. Find help online at www.childline.org.uk where you can access lots of tips around relationships and what you should expect from them.
When talking about friendships and relationships this also includes those on social media. Remember you should never share anything online that you wouldn't share with your family.
There's a person attached to every body, respect both.
If you are concerned that you are in an unhealthy relationship and you need help, you can find information and support at Disrespect Nobody.
